Maplas vs NotebookLM: choose your study workflow
Compare the work you want to do after uploading a source.
Try Maplas if you want to develop your own visual notes on an editable canvas while reading and revising. Consider NotebookLM if you want a source-based research assistant with several generated study formats.
Both go beyond a basic mind map
Google's documentation describes source-based chat, branching mind maps and other study formats. Its current help pages use the name Gemini Notebook; this page also uses the familiar NotebookLM name. Maps, citations and quizzes alone are not unique to Maplas. Google product overview.
| Your priority | Maplas | NotebookLM / Gemini Notebook |
|---|---|---|
| Explore a source as a map | AI-generated explanatory nodes on an editable whiteboard. | Branching source summaries; expand branches and select nodes to ask questions. |
| Build your own visual notes | Write and draw on the canvas, arrange nodes, select source passages and snip PDF figures beside the map. | The cited mind-map guide describes navigation, chat, download and sharing. Test your desired editing workflow in the product before deciding. |
| Check supporting material | Source references on grounded nodes; highlights when quotes can be matched. Some references are broader. | Source-grounded chat with inline citations. |
| Revise in different ways | Quizzes, spaced repetition, study mode and flashcard export. | Quizzes, flashcards, audio and video overviews are listed in Google's current plan documentation. |

When I would start with Maplas
You want to keep changing the layout and writing your own explanations as you read. The combination to test is the source viewer beside the canvas, source-linked nodes, manual notes and practice from the map. Try this on one PDF chapter.
When I would start with Google's notebook
You mainly want to ask questions across sources or explore audio and video study formats. Google's documented range of formats makes it a useful candidate for that workflow. This recommendation is an interpretation of the linked documentation, not a head-to-head usability benchmark.
A fair way to compare them
- Use the same short document and the same learning question.
- Check three generated explanations against the source.
- Try adding your own correction and returning to it later.
- Try one practice activity. Choose the workflow you actually want to repeat.
Maplas currently has an English interface and does not support real-time multi-user editing. Both tools can produce mistakes. This page does not claim benchmark results or a universal winner. Check Maplas pricing and Google's current plans before subscribing.
